The Ichan Kala is a unique museum in the open air, which encompasses a huge territory surrounded by medeival thick walls made of clay. There are several gates leading inside, each decorated in its own unique way. Ichan Kala is an architectural museum, with dozens of madrassahs, mosques, caravan serais, the Harem of the Khiva Ruler. Yet, inside Ichan Kala you can find many other displays devoted to folklore, Uzbek dances and songs, folklore, handcrafts and toys, plus items sold in the street such as suzannis, Turkmenian skull-caps and rugs.
